Issue 8 - September 2007

Issue eight has an article about coils and the relationship between the resistance of coil windings and the mass of the coil core material and yoke. There's a page dedicated to contact points, the usual reader's machines, and a special build by Brad Dawe. In this issue there's a huge interview with Lyle Tuttle that takes up more than half of the magazine. Lyle has been tattooing since 1949, and he's been building machines throughout his career. He was tattooing when almost every major change in tattooing and tattoo equipment happened. In this interview he answered every question I asked about machine function, capacitors, coils, springs, he even tells us how to make a contact point from a spark plug. It really is an important interview - I feel lucky that he even agreed to do it.

The cover of Issue eight was drawn from a section of the stencil for the tattoo on page two, and it is printed at the actual size of the stencil. The tattoo took about 30 hours to do.

The design and layout of this issue was done by Daniel Innes. Everyone who knows me knows I don't use a computer - I write Machinegun out completely by hand and I have to depend on somebody to do the design and layout and just get it in a format that can be printed. I think this issue has turned out better than usual because Daniel is a tattoo artist and he approaches things from a tattooer's perspective, so for me it was easy to work with him.
